Assisted Living in Sarasota, FL

What Florida's license categories actually permit, what a Sarasota community costs, and how to read a state inspection report before you tour.

Assisted living in Sarasota is a licensed residential setting for an older adult who needs daily help with bathing, dressing, meals or medication but does not need round-the-clock nursing. Florida draws that line in statute, not in brochure language: s. 429.02, Florida Statutes, defines an assisted living facility as housing, meals and one or more personal services, and the activities of daily living as ambulation, bathing, dressing, eating, grooming and toileting. Independent living sits below that line and is not a licensed care category at all. Memory care sits alongside it, answering cognitive rather than physical need.

Scope note. This section is informational only. Daniel Treiman is a Realtor, not a care provider or placement agent, and nothing here recommends any community. Most people reading this are reading it for a parent, from another state, faster than they wanted. For the care decision, use sources that sell nothing: the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida Elder Helpline (866-413-5337), Florida SHINE, and the state license lookup below.

Assisted Living in Sarasota: What to Expect

Day to day, a standard community provides a room or apartment, three meals, housekeeping, transport, activities, help with the activities of daily living, and medication assistance. Staffing is a floor, not a target: Rule 59A-36.010, F.A.C., sets minimum staff hours per week by census — 253 for 16 to 25 residents, 539 for 86 to 95 — requires a staff member awake at all hours where there are 17 or more, and a current First Aid and CPR card holder on site at all times.

Florida defines supervision in s. 429.02 as “reminding residents to engage in activities of daily living and the self-administration of medication, and, when necessary, observing or providing verbal cuing.” Reminding is a far lower bar than hands-on help — and the license, not the decor, sets the ceiling.

License What it additionally permits
Standard Personal services: physical assistance with, or supervision of, the activities of daily living and self-administered medication (s. 429.07).
Extended congregate care (ECC) Nursing acts and supportive services beyond the standard license, so a resident otherwise disqualified from continued residence can age in place. Rule 59A-36.021 adds a service plan and monthly nursing assessment.
Limited nursing services (LNS) Nursing acts by a licensed nurse for residents “not complex enough to require 24-hour nursing supervision” (s. 429.02), on a practitioner’s order, with progress notes (Rule 59A-36.022).
Limited mental health (LMH) Required of any facility serving a mental health resident: someone drawing Social Security disability or SSI for a mental disorder who also receives optional state supplementation (s. 429.075).

The move up is triggered by law as much as by need. Section 429.26 bars continued residency for anyone requiring 24-hour nursing supervision or bedridden beyond seven consecutive days — 14 in an ECC facility. Ending a residency takes 45 days’ written notice with reasons (s. 429.28), excepting emergency medical relocation, harmful conduct, or a court order.

This is the wrong setting if your parent needs nursing around the clock, is bedridden other than briefly, or wanders. Memory care or skilled nursing is the honest answer, and a community that admits them anyway deserves suspicion, not gratitude. If no care is needed yet, try independent living or a 55+ community.

What It Costs

A Place for Mom’s Sarasota page, last updated 8 August 2026 on its own 2024 data, breaks Sarasota assisted living down by unit type. Treat these as midpoints of a wide distribution.

Unit type Sarasota average, per month
Semi-private room $3,111
Studio $4,112
One bedroom $4,953
Two bedroom $6,297

The same page put Florida’s average at $4,853 and the national average at $5,830, though its Sarasota headline was soft: it carried both $4,600 and $4,897 in different places that day. CareScout’s 2025 Cost of Care Survey, the study formerly published by Genworth, put the national median at $6,200 a month from fieldwork done July through November 2025.

Two pricing models dominate. An all-inclusive rate bundles rent, meals and care into one number. A base-plus-levels model quotes rent, then adds a care charge set by a level, usually one to five, scored on the community’s own point assessment of ADLs, medication, continence, transfers and night checks. That instrument is commercial, not statutory: Florida requires a medical examination within 60 days before admission or 30 days after (s. 429.26) but sets no price tiers. Ask who scores it, how often, and what notice precedes an increase. Rentals usually add a one-time community fee.

Medicare pays for none of it. Medicare.gov states plainly that “Medicare doesn’t pay for long-term care,” and that Medicare and most health insurance including Medigap do not cover custodial care. What can help: long-term care insurance; VA Aid and Attendance, added monthly to a VA pension for a veteran or surviving spouse needing help with daily activities; Florida’s optional state supplementation for SSI recipients meeting assisted living eligibility (s. 409.212, F.S.); and two Medicaid routes, Assistive Care Services and Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care. Per the Area Agency on Aging, Medicaid eligibility is set by the Department of Elder Affairs while enrollment runs through AHCA.

How to Evaluate a Community

Look the facility up first. AHCA’s Florida Health Finder facility locator at quality.healthfinder.fl.gov gives license status, inspection reports and deficiency statements, complaints and final orders for every licensed facility offering assisted living in Sarasota County. Read the deficiency statement itself, not a summary score: do findings repeat across survey cycles, and are they administrative — training records, incomplete files — or about resident care? Then take this list on the tour, and ask for the resident contract before you leave a deposit.

  • Which specialty licenses do you hold — ECC, limited nursing services, limited mental health? May I see them, and what happens the day my mother needs more help than they permit?
  • How many care staff are on the floor at three on a Tuesday afternoon, and at three in the morning? Who holds the First Aid and CPR card overnight?
  • All-inclusive, or base rent plus levels of care? Show me the point scale, who scores it, last year’s increase, and whether any community or entrance fee is refundable.
  • What are your terms for ending a residency, next to the 45 days the statute requires?
  • Are you in a Sarasota County evacuation zone? See hurricane preparedness — surge zones are not FEMA flood zones.
  • What is staff turnover in care and memory care, and may I return unannounced for a meal?

The resident bill of rights in s. 429.28, F.S., is the backstop: freedom from abuse and neglect, dignity and privacy, personal possessions, private telephone access at least from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., control of one’s own finances, sharing a room with a spouse, and reaching an ombudsman without retaliation. Contacts for the ombudsman and the elder abuse hotline must be posted; if not, that tells you something.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between assisted living and memory care?

Assisted living answers physical need — help with bathing, dressing, meals and medication. Memory care answers cognitive need, in a secured setting with staff trained for dementia behaviors. Many Sarasota campuses hold both, and the trigger for moving is usually wandering or behavior the staffing pattern cannot safely supervise.

How much does assisted living cost in Sarasota?

A Place for Mom’s Sarasota data, updated August 2026 from 2024 figures, runs from about $3,111 a month for a semi-private room to $6,297 for a two-bedroom, studios near $4,112. CareScout’s 2025 survey puts the national median at $6,200. Care charges above base rent vary by level.

Does Medicare pay for assisted living?

No. Medicare.gov states that Medicare does not pay for long-term care, and that Medicare and most health insurance, including Medigap, do not cover custodial care such as help with bathing, dressing and meals. Short skilled nursing stays after a qualifying hospital stay are a separate benefit.

When does someone have to leave assisted living?

Section 429.26, Florida Statutes, bars continued residency for anyone needing 24-hour nursing supervision or bedridden beyond seven consecutive days — 14 in an extended congregate care facility. Section 429.28 then requires 45 days’ written notice with reasons, except for emergency relocation, harmful conduct, or a court order.

Talk to Daniel

There is nothing to sign up for on this page, and Daniel is a Realtor rather than a care provider or placement agent. The one question he can genuinely answer is the real-estate one usually sitting underneath this decision: what a Sarasota home is likely to bring, how long a sale realistically takes, and what homestead and portability do when a parent moves into care or a surviving spouse relocates. For the care itself, the Elder Helpline at the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida (866-413-5337) and Florida SHINE are free and sell nothing.
