Healthcare in Sarasota for Retirees
Healthcare in Sarasota is stronger than a metro this size would predict, and one institution accounts for most of that. Sarasota Memorial Hospital holds a 5-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and is, per its own January 2026 announcement, the only hospital in Florida to have earned five stars every year since CMS launched the rating program in 2016. Its Venice campus reached five stars in May 2026, giving the system two 5-star hospitals. Both carry an "A" patient-safety grade in The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2026 round.
That is the real headline, and for some people it is reason enough to move here. The counterweight is just as real. Sarasota County is 38.8% aged 65 and over, per U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts using 2025 population estimates, and the medical market behaves as a market with that age profile behaves: specialists are plentiful, primary care is tight, winter is far busier than summer, and the Medicare Advantage plan you bought in Ohio will not follow you here. Those four things are what healthcare in Sarasota for retirees actually comes down to.
Sarasota Memorial Hospital
Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is a public hospital district governed by a nine-member Sarasota County Public Hospital Board elected by local voters. It opened in 1925 as a 32-bed county hospital and is now the largest employer in Sarasota County, with more than 10,000 staff, per its own About Us page, retrieved August 2026. It dominates healthcare in Sarasota to a degree that has no real parallel in most retirement markets.
Scale. The Sarasota campus at 1700 S. Tamiami Trail runs 897 beds; the Venice campus at 2600 Laurel Road East in North Venice runs 212 private rooms (About Us, retrieved August 2026). A January 2026 system release put the network at roughly 2,500 physicians, 11,000 employees and 2 million patient visits a year. It runs four emergency rooms — the two hospital campuses plus freestanding ERs at 7250 University Parkway in Lakewood Ranch and 2345 Bobcat Village Center Road in North Port — and seven urgent care centers.
What only it does. Sarasota Memorial is the only trauma center in Sarasota County, designated Level II, and the region’s only Comprehensive Stroke Center, per its emergency services page, retrieved August 2026. For a retiree the stroke designation is the one to underline: comprehensive is the top tier, meaning clot-retrieval capability on site rather than stabilize-and-transfer.
The ratings, with dates attached. CMS: five stars at Sarasota for an 11th straight year and five stars at Venice for the first time, announced May 13, 2026. Leapfrog: an "A" at both campuses in Spring 2026, with Sarasota holding "straight A" status. U.S. News & World Report’s 2025–26 Best Hospitals edition ranked SMH-Sarasota #46 nationally in obstetrics and gynecology — not the specialty this audience is shopping for — but also rated it high-performing, meaning top 10% nationally, in orthopedics, gastroenterology and GI surgery, urology, and pulmonology, alongside 17 conditions and procedures including hip replacement, stroke, heart arrhythmia and pacemaker implantation. Newsweek’s 2026 America’s Best Hospitals for Specialized Care list named it in endocrine, neurology and orthopedic care, per Sarasota Memorial’s June 3, 2026 release.
What is coming. Sarasota Memorial broke ground in November 2025 on a $507 million hospital in North Port — 100 beds at opening, shelled for 208, targeted for late 2028. If you are shopping Wellen Park or North Port, that date belongs in your calculation.
Other Hospitals & Health Systems
The rest of the Sarasota healthcare market is smaller but not irrelevant, and in a few neighborhoods it is what you will actually use.
HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital sits at 5731 Bee Ridge Road with 155 all-private beds, a Primary Stroke Center designation, and cardiology, orthopedics, spine and general surgery services. Its Leapfrog grade slipped from an "A" in Spring 2025 to a "B" in Fall 2025 and a "B" again in Spring 2026 (Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, retrieved August 2026). HCA also runs freestanding ERs at Braden River and in Venice.
Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, at 8330 Lakewood Ranch Boulevard in Manatee County, holds an "A" from Leapfrog in Spring 2026 after "A" grades in Spring and Fall 2025. Leapfrog’s Spring 2026 detail flags above-average C. difficile, bloodstream and colon-surgery infection rates alongside strong nurse staffing and medication-safety scores — the kind of split worth reading yourself rather than taking a letter grade at face value.
HCA Florida Englewood Hospital, 700 Medical Boulevard in Englewood, is a 100-bed hospital just over the Charlotte County line, the practical option for the far south end.
One absence still shapes the south county. ShorePoint Health Venice closed its emergency department on August 29, 2022 and shut entirely on September 22, 2022, removing a 312-bed hospital from Venice in weeks. Sarasota Memorial’s Venice campus absorbed the volume. If you hear longtime residents complain about Venice emergency waits, that closure is the history behind it.
Medicare in Florida
Federal Medicare does not change when you cross a state line. Everything bolted onto it does: your Medicare Advantage plan, your Part D drug plan, and whether your doctors are in a network. Nationally, 55% of eligible beneficiaries were in Medicare Advantage in 2026, per KFF’s analysis published June 5, 2026 and updated July 1, 2026.
Advantage and Part D plans are county-based. The plan sold in your old county is not sold here. Moving permanently out of your plan’s service area triggers a Special Enrollment Period: notify the plan first and it begins the month before the move and runs two full months after; tell them afterward and it begins the month you move, again running two months (Medicare.gov, August 2026). Miss it and you can land on Original Medicare with no drug coverage until the next annual enrollment.
Medigap works the opposite way. A Medicare Supplement policy pairs with Original Medicare and is honored by any US provider that takes Medicare, so relocating does not disturb it. The catch is on the way in: Medigap Open Enrollment is a single six-month window beginning the first month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. Outside it, Medicare.gov is blunt: "there’s no federal guarantee that an insurance company will sell you a Medigap policy," and if one does, "it may cost more due to past or present health problems." Florida adds no birthday rule or year-round guaranteed-issue window on top of federal rights, so a retiree who took Advantage at 65 and wants Medigap at 72 here is generally underwritten.
| When you relocate | Original Medicare + Medigap | Medicare Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Follows you to Florida? | Yes, with any provider taking Medicare | No — sold by county service area |
| Enrollment window on a move | None needed | Month before the move plus two if you notify first; otherwise the move month plus two |
| Turned down later? | Yes — underwriting applies outside your six-month window | No — Advantage cannot underwrite you |
| Half the year up north? | Works in both places | HMO: emergency and urgent care only |
| Sarasota Memorial status | Accepted | Carrier-dependent; Humana out since 2019 |

The local network trap. Sarasota Memorial’s insurance list shows Medicare Advantage acceptance from Aetna, Florida Blue, Wellcare, Florida Community Care, Freedom Health, Optimum, Simply Healthcare and UnitedHealthcare. Humana is not on it: Sarasota Memorial facilities have been out of network for Humana since 2019, and its physician group, First Physicians Group, left Humana’s network on January 1, 2025 — alignment with the health system, the group says, not a failed negotiation. Traditional Medicare and Medigap are unaffected. Humana is one of Florida’s largest Advantage carriers, so this is not a footnote.
Snowbirds. You cannot hold two Advantage plans for two states; the plan follows your permanent address. Original Medicare plus Medigap is what genuinely works in two homes. Before committing, run Medicare’s Plan Finder at medicare.gov/plan-compare on a real Sarasota County ZIP code, then telephone the practice with the exact plan name and plan ID, not the carrier’s name — carriers sell many products and practices contract with only some. Then call Florida SHINE, the Florida Department of Elder Affairs’ free, unbiased, confidential counseling program, on 1-800-96-ELDER. Its counselors sell nothing.
Specialist Access & Wait Times
The four specialties this audience asks about — cardiology, orthopedics, oncology and neurology — are the ones Sarasota healthcare does well. Sarasota Memorial made Premier’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals list and Newsweek’s 2026 specialized-care rankings in neurology and orthopedic care, per its June 3, 2026 release; U.S. News rated its orthopedics high-performing in the 2025–26 edition; and the Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute consolidates medical and radiation oncology on the Sarasota campus.
Wait times are the honest problem, and they are national rather than peculiar to here. AMN Healthcare’s 2025 Survey of Physician Appointment Wait Times, released May 27, 2025 and covering 1,391 physician offices across 15 large metro markets, found an average new-patient wait of 31 days, up from 26 in 2022 and 21 in 2004. By specialty: gastroenterology 40 days, dermatology 36.5, cardiology 33, family medicine 23.5, orthopedic surgery 12. Sarasota was not among the 15 markets, so read those as the shape of the problem, not a local measurement. The same survey found 82% of offices accepting Medicare.
What you drive to Tampa for. Organ transplant: Tampa General completed its 15,000th transplant in May 2026, per WUSF Health News. NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center care and its trial access: Moffitt Cancer Center’s locations are in the Tampa Bay area, none in Sarasota County. Level I trauma. Some rare-disease clinics. Roughly an hour each way outside season, worse from January to April — a real cost in active treatment, a shrug for an annual check.
Primary care is the tight spot, not the specialists. Concierge and membership practices are a conspicuous part of the Sarasota primary-care market, functioning as a paid fast lane: an annual fee buys same-week access and a physician who answers the telephone. Whether that reads as an option or a toll depends on your budget. Sarasota is the wrong fit if you expect an unhurried relationship with a general internist from day one and will not pay a membership fee for it. Arrive with a referral, or plan on waiting.
Choosing a Neighborhood With Healthcare in Mind
Nobody writes this down, so here it is: where you buy determines which emergency room you go to, and they are not equivalent. Here healthcare in Sarasota becomes a map.
| Where you are looking | Nearest 24/7 emergency care | What is actually there |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Sarasota, West of Trail, Southside | SMH-Sarasota, 1700 S. Tamiami Trail | Full hospital; only trauma center (Level II); Comprehensive Stroke Center |
| Bee Ridge, Palmer Ranch, Sarasota Square | HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital, 5731 Bee Ridge Rd | 155-bed hospital; Primary Stroke Center |
| Lakewood Ranch, University Parkway | SMH ER at Lakewood Ranch, 7250 University Pkwy; Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, 8330 Lakewood Ranch Blvd | Freestanding ER plus a full hospital in Manatee County |
| Venice, Nokomis, Laurel | SMH-Venice, 2600 Laurel Rd E, North Venice | Full hospital; 212 private rooms; 5-star CMS as of May 2026 |
| North Port, Wellen Park | SMH North Port ER, 2345 Bobcat Village Center Rd | Freestanding ER only; transfers out; full hospital due late 2028 |
| Englewood, far south county | HCA Florida Englewood Hospital, 700 Medical Blvd | 100-bed hospital, Charlotte County side |
The distinction that matters most is freestanding ER versus hospital. A freestanding emergency room stabilizes you, then transfers you by ambulance to a hospital that can admit and treat. With a cardiac or stroke history, "there is an ER five minutes away" and "there is a cath lab five minutes away" are not the same sentence. North Port and Wellen Park sit in that gap until Sarasota Memorial’s North Port hospital opens in late 2028.
That pushes many retirees toward Venice and Nokomis, Lakewood Ranch, or the Sarasota corridor between Bee Ridge and downtown. Del Webb Sarasota, despite the name, sits in the Venice area rather than the city of Sarasota — a confusing name concealing a real advantage, since it sits near the Venice campus. Frequently Asked Questions
Is healthcare in Sarasota good for retirees?
Yes, on the published measures. Sarasota Memorial holds 5-star CMS ratings at both its Sarasota and Venice campuses as of May 2026, plus an A Leapfrog safety grade in Spring 2026. The weak spot is primary care access, not hospital quality or specialist depth.
Does Sarasota Memorial accept Medicare Advantage plans?
Some, not all. Its insurance list, retrieved August 2026, includes Aetna, Florida Blue, Wellcare, Florida Community Care, Freedom Health, Optimum Healthcare, Simply Healthcare and UnitedHealthcare. Humana is not on it; Sarasota Memorial has been out of network for Humana since 2019.
What happens to my Medicare Advantage plan when I move to Florida?
It stops working, because Advantage plans are sold by county service area. A permanent move triggers a Special Enrollment Period beginning the month before your move if you notify the plan in advance, or the month you move if you do not, and running two months afterward.
Can I keep my Medigap policy if I move to Sarasota?
Yes. A Medicare Supplement policy pairs with Original Medicare and is accepted by any US provider who takes Medicare, so a move does not disturb it. Getting one later is harder: outside your six-month window insurers may underwrite, and Florida adds no extra guaranteed-issue right.
How hard is it to find a primary care doctor in Sarasota?
Harder than finding a specialist. Sarasota County is 38.8% aged 65 and over per Census QuickFacts 2025 estimates, and demand shows it. Concierge and membership practices are common and act as a paid fast lane. Start the search before you close on a house, not after.
What care do Sarasota retirees leave town for?
Organ transplant, NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center care and trials, Level I trauma, and some rare-disease subspecialties. Tampa General and Moffitt Cancer Center are the usual destinations, roughly an hour north outside season and longer between January and April.
