A LOCAL'S HONEST GUIDE

Thinking About Retiring in Sarasota?

Cost of living, 55+ communities, hurricanes, health care and senior living — researched, sourced and dated by a Realtor who has worked this market for 38 years.

If you are thinking about retiring in Sarasota, this site answers the questions the brochures skip: what a house here actually costs to own, which communities are genuinely age-restricted, what three hurricane seasons did to this county, and what happens to your Medicare the day a Florida address becomes permanent.

It is written for people in their fifties, sixties and seventies weighing Florida’s Gulf Coast — usually over months or years, often with a spouse who is not yet convinced. Every figure here carries a source and a date. Where the honest answer is unflattering to Sarasota, the page says so, and every section tells you plainly who it is wrong for.

Start With the Big Question

Should you retire here at all? That is a comparison, not a yes-or-no, and it turns on money more than weather. Sarasota is no longer cheap: the REALTOR® Association of Sarasota and Manatee put the county’s July 2026 median single-family sale price at $493,500, up 5.0% year over year. What offsets it is structural — Florida’s constitution bars any state tax on the income of natural persons (Article VII, Section 5), and homestead plus the Save Our Homes cap holds your assessment down once you are in.

Where Sarasota fits among the best places to retire in Florida lays the comparison out, alongside a retiree cost of living breakdown, the Florida tax mechanics that apply to a fixed income, and a Sarasota vs. Naples comparison that concedes where Naples wins.

Explore 55+ Communities

“55+” is a legal status under the federal Housing for Older Persons Act, with an occupancy test a community must meet and re-verify. “Active adult” is a marketing phrase with no legal content at all. The gap between the two is where most of the disappointment lives.

Two examples. There is no community called Del Webb Sarasota — delwebb.com’s Sarasota page is a market page, and the Del Webb communities under it sit in Lakewood Ranch and Parrish, in Manatee County. And Esplanade at Lakewood Ranch, per its 55places listing, carries no age restriction. Start with Sarasota’s 55+ communities, then the Del Webb Sarasota guide, the Esplanade communities guide, and what “active adult” actually means.

The Practical Stuff

Hurricanes, health care and heat are the three things that stop people from moving to Florida, and only one of them should.

Sarasota County’s government describes Hurricane Milton’s October 2024 landfall near Siesta Key as the county’s first since 1944. The most useful thing to learn before you buy is that a hurricane evacuation level — Sarasota County uses A through E, based on storm surge — is not a FEMA flood zone. They are different systems answering different questions. Health care is the strong side: Sarasota Memorial announced in May 2026 that both its Sarasota and Venice campuses hold CMS five-star ratings. The practical realities covers all of it, with pages on Sarasota hurricanes, health care for retirees and the weather month by month.

What Daily Life Actually Looks Like

A metro this size supporting a professional orchestra, a ballet company, an opera company and a state art museum is unusual. So is a calendar that empties out from May to October. The Sarasota retirement lifestyle covers the arts, the water and the seasonal rhythm underneath them, with detail on golf communities and bundled memberships and waterfront retirement living.

If You Are Researching Care for a Parent

That part of the site is informational only. Daniel is a Realtor — not a care provider, not a placement agency, and not paid a referral fee by any community named there. It carries no inquiry form and nobody will call you. Senior living in Sarasota explains how the four settings differ and points you to the state’s license and inspection lookup, with pages on independent living, assisted living and memory care.

About Daniel Treiman

Daniel Treiman is a Realtor® with The Treiman Team at Michael Saunders & Company, and he has worked this market for 38 years. He ranks in the top 0.5% of area agents and has closed more than $550 million in Sarasota-area real estate.

That tenure is why this site takes the form it does. Thirty-eight years covers several booms, at least two corrections, the building of Lakewood Ranch and every storm on the hurricane page. It means he can tell you what a neighborhood is like in August rather than in February, and what a community’s recorded declaration says rather than what its sales center says. His brokerage profile and contact details are at treimanteam.com.

What This Site Is Not

It is not a listings portal. There is no MLS search here, no saved-search signup, no drip campaign waiting behind a form. These pages are research, meant to be read and then left alone for as long as you like.

Three sister sites cover what this one deliberately does not. SarasotaNeighborhoods.com handles neighborhood-level research — what each area is actually like, street by street. MovingToSarasotaFL.com is for families and working-age relocation: schools, jobs, commutes. TreimanTeam.com is where you go to actually talk to Daniel. Shorter pieces on one question at a time appear in the guides and insight blog.

Talk to Daniel

If a particular address or community is on your list, Daniel can tell you what it actually means — its evacuation level, whether the age restriction is recorded, what the association budget and reserve schedule show. He is glad to answer a question that goes nowhere. Most people take a year or more.
